Community Group Reading List for 2021

Below is a list of eight books our Community Groups are going through together. Going through excellent books that apply Scripture to our daily lives can be even more fruitful when read with others. What is more, we believe that the community we seek is found when we gather with purpose and intention and openness to growth together.

Confessions

This Christian classic has stood the test of time and helped people be more vulnerable and astounded by the mercy and grace of God as shared through a faithful guide. Filled with deep prayers of devotion and resolve to follow more closely to Christ, this book will help you be vulnerable to the sway of God’s Spirit.

Crazy Busy

In Jesus’ parable of the sower, one of the seeds sprouted but was soon choked out by the cares of this life. This book explores the insidious nature of being busy with so many good things, that we forget to pay attention to the “one needful thing”.

Gentle & Lowly

A deep, insightful study of the heart of Christ. Oftentimes we can be overwhelmed with our sin and underwhelmed with our experience of faith. This book is a steady guide through Scripture to reclaim our hearts by displaying Christ’s heart.

The Gospel-Driven Life

In his well-received Christless Christianity, Michael Horton offered a prophetic wake-up call for a self-centered American church. With The Gospel-Driven Life he turns from the crisis to the solutions, offering his recommendations for a new reformation in the faith, practice, and witness of contemporary Christianity. This insightful book will guide readers in reorienting their faith and the church's purpose toward the Good News of the gospel.

How People Change

The Christian life is a cruciform life that is slow, arduous, and joy-filled. This book explores the particulars of how we are to be changed from one degree of glory to another as we are conformed into the image of Christ.

Life Together

In this book, Bonhoeffer challenges us to truly experience the community of faith as it was intended by God. And oftentimes it is shocking, constantly challenging, and always life-changing.

You Are What You Love

This book explores our nature as creatures of habit. Our lives are shaped by what we do repeatedly. What we behold and give our affections to will ultimately shape the kind of people we are.

When Helping Hurts

This book encourages us to see the dignity in everyone, to empower the materially poor, and to know that we are all uniquely needy—and that God in the gospel is reconciling all things to himself.

Focusing on both North American and Majority World contexts, When Helping Hurts provides proven strategies for effective poverty alleviation, catalyzing the idea that sustainable change comes not from the outside in, but from the inside out.
